Learn how to place an area rug in any room with expert advice from the specialists at Furnitureland South's Rug Gallery.
You found the rug. Now comes the question everyone eventually asks: where exactly does it go? Placement is one of the most common sources of uncertainty in decorating, and one of the most consequential. Get it right, and the whole room clicks into place. This guide walks you through the rules of thumb that make it straightforward.
“A rug can really make or break a room,” says Mary John Minter, Assistant Manager of our Rug Gallery. “Think of it this way — rugs occupy roughly a third of the overall space. They’re one of the most important design elements in any room.”
If you’ve ever felt unsure about where to start, you’re not alone. Mary John works with clients on this every day, and she’s happy to walk you through it.
Rug Placement in a Dining Room
The dining room is actually one of the more straightforward places to start. There’s a reliable rule of thumb: every chair should sit fully on the rug, even when pulled away from the table.
“Dining rooms are a hard-and-fast rule,” Mary John explains. “Chairs should always sit on the rug, even when pulled out.” To find the right size, simply add 24 inches to both the length and width of your dining table. That gives you a comfortable margin on all sides.
Rug Placement in a Living Room
Living rooms offer a bit more flexibility, which can feel freeing, or occasionally overwhelming. The guiding principle is connection, your rug should be touching your furniture, not floating beneath the coffee table on its own.
“In the living room, ideally, your furniture should be touching the rug,” Mary John says. “Whether it’s just the front legs or all four, the rug should anchor the upholstery.”
Think of it as the foundation of the seating area, something that gives the whole arrangement a sense of weight and intention.
Rug Placement in a Bedroom
In the bedroom, a well-placed rug does something simple but meaningful, it’s what your feet first land on in the morning.
“A large rug will up the cozy factor and define the room,” Mary John notes. As a starting point, plan for at least 24 to 30 inches of rug to extend from either side of the bed. If a single large rug isn’t quite right for your layout, two smaller rugs placed on each side work beautifully as well.
For beds tucked into a corner, consider angling the rug toward the foot of the bed, or placing it along the open side. And for twin beds arranged parallel to each other, a rug centered between them ties the space together naturally.
With a little guidance, rug placement becomes far less mysterious and a lot more enjoyable. If you’d like help finding the right size, style, or fit for any room in your home, our Design Consultants are here. Come visit us in-store, or explore our rug collection online at Furnitureland South.
